Mahindra-backed Classic Legends is set to relaunch the Yezdi brand in India by the third quarter (Q3) this financial year (FY22).
After years of speculations, it has now come to light that the much-loved Yezdi motorcycle brand will be reintroduced in India this year.
It is expected that the relaunch event will take place around the pre-Diwali period this year, which puts the launch timeline in the month of October.
The introduction of new generation Yezdi motorcycles is crucial for Classic Legends’ business in India, since the Jawa brand has not fired on all cylinders since its introduction in November 2018.
Sales figure of Jawa-branded motorcycles stood at about 50,000 units 2 years from their launch and if Classic Legends has any intention of fighting segment leader Royal Enfield, it needs more volumes.
This is where Yezdi India relaunch fits in, because, the brand is expected to bring in the additional sales that would help Classic Legends’ business case.
Also, it would help the group’s struggling dealers who have had only 3 motorcycles, which are arguably similar, to sell until now, stay afloat as well.
While the positioning of the Yezdi brand in comparison to Jawa is unknown, early Yezdi models are set to use the same 293cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine found in Jawa bikes.
Do note that, in March, a scrambler-type motorcycle, expected to be the first new Yezdi bike, was spotted doing on-road testing on Pune-Nashik highway.
What’s more, Yezdi bikes will share several parts with Jawas and would even be manufactured on the same assembly line at Pithampur. Last year, Classic Legends ramped up its monthly production output from about 4000 units to 7000 units.
