Yamaha Unveils Tricity Scooter, R25 Does Not Show Up

A state-of-the-art teaser video with line drawings of what could be the production version of the R25 and a countdown that was suppose to end yesterday. Yamaha had a grand entry planned or at least it seemed to unveil the R25. But what came through on the other side of the countdown was the unveiling of the Tricity scooter at an event in Thailand, while the R25 production version was nowhere in sight.

The Yamaha Tricity scooter measures 1905 mm in length, 735 mm in width and 1215 mm in height, and started life as a concept that was unveiled at the 2014 EICMA in Milan. The scooter is a three-wheeler that uses Yamaha’s Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW) mechanism, which allows the front two wheels to lean with the chassis that aids during cornering. The mechanism uses an integration of ‘Parallelogram link’ and a ‘cantilevered telescopic suspension’ for the two front wheels to create agility, sporty handling and stability while adding to the joy of riding. The independent suspension also provides a comfortable ride quality.

The Yamaha Tricity scooter is powered by a 125cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve YMJET-FI engine producing 11 PS of power at 9000 RPM and 10.4 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM. The engine is mated to a CVT gearbox for smooth acceleration throughout the rev range. The scooter gets telescopic front forks while the rear gets a unit swing setup. Stopping power comes from hydraulic discs at the front and rear. The scooter gets alloy wheels wrapped around 14-inch tyres at the front and a 12-inch tyre at the rear.

The Yamaha Tricity is aimed at the urban areas of Europe, Japan and ASEAN countries where it can be used widely as a personal mobility vehicle. The scooter’s compact dimensions make it a perfect vehicle for urban spaces and a very convenient option. Yamaha will offer the Tricity in three colour options namely white, red and grey. The company is targeting around 10,000 unit sales in the first year of its release in Thailand, where the scooter goes on sale next month.

Coming to the Yamaha R25/R3; it would be safe to say that much like us, the entire Asian media was looking forward to the event anxiously for the production version to be unveiled. However, the website suggests the Rev Product 002 aka Yamaha R25 is still under development and would take some time to make its public debut. We did find the entire campaign to be very creative and it indeed worked up our appetite for the next big Yamaha product. Stay tuned as we keep a track on the unveil of the R25 production model in the coming weeks.
