Yamaha To Launch Ray 125cc Scooter By September 2014

The scooter segment is seeing good growth in India even though the overall automobile market is seeing a major slowdown. Thus betting big on scooters has turned out to be a wise decision for many manufacturers, Yamaha being one of them. The Ray is one of our favourite scooters as it’s not only easy to ride but also a whole lot of fun thanks to it razor sharp handling and peppy performance. Still, the Yamaha Ray can’t match more powerful scooters like the Suzuki Swish and Piaggio Vespa. Honda too is entering the 125cc scooter segment with the Activa 125 so why should Yamaha be left behind.

As we all know, Yamaha and Honda closely observe each other and do similar things all the time. Yamaha got the R15, Honda followed with the CBR150R; Yamaha launched child mascot Zippy, Honda followed with Chhota Bheem; and so on and so forth. Now that Honda has announced its plans to bring the Activa 125, Yamaha is working on the Ray 125. The Yamaha Ray 125 will be powered by a 125cc engine and we expect output to be around 8.5 BHP of power and 10 Nm of torque. The weight of the Ray 125 will be under 110 kgs and the styling will be similar to the lower capacity version but the overall dimensions will be slightly bigger.

The 125cc mill powering the Ray 125 will be a bored out version of the 113cc motor powering the current Ray. Yamaha will focus on fuel economy on the Ray 125 rather than turning its entire attention on performance. The Yamaha Ray 125 will come with a front disc brake which means a large 12-inch wheel will be used at the front. Yamaha has been concentrating a lot on scooters and the Ray 125 will be the last scooter in the near future for the Japanese brand as post its launch, the company will turn its focus on what it does best, motorcycles.
