Yamaha is replacing the engine cylinder head O-ring due to a possibility of an oil leak. The company hasn’t made an official announcement about the recall yet.
Yamaha has secretly recalled the Alpha scooter in India due to an engine related issue. The Japanese company is replacing the engine cylinder head O-ring which is having issues, causing an oil leak. The recall is being done across all Yamaha dealerships in India and the company is contacting owners directly. The part will be replaced immediately, taking around three hours and the customer is obviously not charged anything for it.
The Yamaha Alpha was launched at the 2014 Auto Expo and competes with the TVS Jupiter and Honda Activa scooters. It is powered by a 113cc, air-cooled motor which generates 7 HP of power and 8.1 Nm of torque, matched to a CVT gearbox which Yamaha likes to call V-belt automatic. Sharing many of its mechanicals with the Ray, the Alpha is targeted at male buyers who aren’t college going because for them there is the Ray Z. The Alpha weighs 104 kgs.
Yamaha has big plans for 2015 and will finally shift back focus to motorcycles. The company does plan to launch a 125cc scooter but before that we will see the Yamaha R25 go on sale, priced at around Rs. 3 lakhs. Yamaha has been doing decent numbers in the Indian market, largely due to its 150cc motorcycles like the FZ and FZ-S while the Fazer and R15 are also doing decent volumes for their price. The automaker will bring in the latest generation R1 by the middle of this year, via the CBU route. Meanwhile, you should read our comparison between the Yamaha Alpha and TVS Jupiter HERE.
