Yamaha R9 revealed, lightest aluminium frame of any Yamaha supersport
Yamaha YZF-R9 revealed, an all-new supersport motorcycle designed to expand its popular R-series lineup. Positioned between the YZF-R7 and the flagship YZF-R1, the YZF-R9 combines sharp aesthetics with advanced performance features.
Distinctive Design and Aerodynamics
The YZF-R9’s design adheres to Yamaha’s R-series DNA, featuring a sleek and aggressive look with sharp, aerodynamic bodywork. The front fairing, which integrates winglets for improved downforce, gives the bike a distinct presence. A centrally mounted LED projector headlight, flanked by LED DRLs, enhances the motorcycle’s menacing front profile. Its side fairings and tail section also reflect sharp lines, complementing the overall sporty aesthetic.
The motorcycle is available in three color options: Team Yamaha Blue, Intensity White/Redline and Matte Raven Black.
Lightweight Frame and Performance-Focused Suspension
At the core of the YZF-R9 is Yamaha’s Deltabox gravity-cast aluminium frame, which the company claims is the lightest ever used in any Yamaha supersport bike. This lightweight construction enhances the bike’s handling and agility, a key factor for riders seeking high performance on both the road and the track. The suspension setup consists of a fully adjustable KYB fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear, promising precise handling and comfort.
The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with Battlax Hypersport S22F tyres, which are designed to offer superior grip in various riding conditions.
Braking and Weight Distribution
Braking is provided by dual 320 mm discs at the front, gripped by Brembo Stylema calipers, and a 220 mm disc at the rear. Yamaha has designed the YZF-R9 to achieve near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, enhancing stability and control at high speeds.
Engine and Performance
The YZF-R9 is powered by an 890cc, crossplane, inline-triple engine that produces 117 BHP, similar to the unit found in the Yamaha MT-09. This engine has been praised for its performance characteristics and distinctive sound. Mated to a six-speed gearbox, the engine is expected to deliver a responsive and exhilarating ride.
Advanced Electronics and Rider Aids
Yamaha has equipped the YZF-R9 with an array of electronic rider aids, all controlled via an IMU-based system. These include traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, and multiple riding modes. The settings for these features can be easily accessed through the switchgear, with information displayed on a TFT screen, offering riders full customisation of their experience.
Global Availability and Pricing
The Yamaha YZF-R9 is currently on sale in international markets, with a price tag of $12,499 (approximately Rs. 10.5 lakhs). While there is no confirmation of an India launch, if it does arrive, the price is expected to be significantly higher due to import duties and taxes.
With its combination of design, performance and technology, the Yamaha YZF-R9 is set to appeal to enthusiasts seeking a balance of track-ready capabilities and real-world usability.
