The Yamaha R25 has been one of the most awaited launches this year. Launched in Indonesia last month, the R25 raked in 2800 bookings within a day. Yamaha Indonesia is surely finding it difficult to keep up with the local demand of the quarter-litre sports bike as the company announced that exports of the R25 will be postponed till next year, until the local demand has been met.
Yamaha’s Indonesian plant will be the global export base for the R25 that will be exporting the 250cc motorcycle to the company’s biggest market Japan, followed by emerging countries and Europe. The R25 produced in Indonesia meets global standards and is 94 percent localised. Located in East Jakarta, the plant will have a production capacity of 2000 units per month with 1000 units allocated for the domestic market and the other half for exports.
The manufacturing of the Yamaha R25 is only the first phase of operations. Indonesia will also become a development base for the company, which will manufacture products from other segments as well in the future. Yamaha is expecting to achieve a sales target of 12,000 in the first years of sales of the R25, which is sure to exceed considering the demand. This also confirms that the R25 will see an India launch only in 2015.
Showcased as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, the Yamaha R25 is powered by a 249cc twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 36 PS of power at 12,000 RPM and 22.1 Nm of torque at 10,000 RPM, paired to a 6-speed transmission. The bike features 298 mm dual-piston floating disc at the front and a single piston 220 mm disc at the rear. Yamaha will officially commence sales of the R25 in Indonesia in July.
