Yamaha MT-25 (Naked R25) Caught Testing In Indonesia

The Yamaha MT-25 is the street-fighter version based on the R25 and is likely to go into production later this year. It is highly likely to be launched in India next year.

The highly awaited R25 sports bike opened to a fabulous response when Yamaha first launched the bike in Indonesia last year. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer had to delay its plans to launch the quarter-litre monster in other countries due to the overwhelming demand in Indonesia itself. Taking the next logical step with the R25 family, Yamaha is now developing the MT-25 naked street-fighter motorcycle that is essentially the R25 minus the fairing and the model was recently caught testing in Indonesia spilling out some details on the upcoming offering.

The Yamaha MT-25 or likely to be called ‘MTN-250’ as per an earlier report will also be manufactured at the company’s facility in Jakarta and will be exported overseas. Based on the R25, the MT-25 retains all underpinnings of the full faired motorcycle including the 250cc parallel twin-cylinder engine that is tuned to produce 36 PS of power and 22.6 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox; but will be tuned differently to adapt to a street-fighter’s character. Aesthetically, the MT-25 is likely to dawn an MT-125 inspired front fascia with a mono headlight cluster and a wide handlebar, while the rear section is expected to get minimal changes.

The Yamaha MT-25 is expected to hit the production line by the end of this year and an Indian launch can also be expected, but not before the end of 2016 or early 2017. Recent reports also suggest that the MT-25 will be accompanied by the MT-03 which is based on the R3 full-faired sports bike and draws power from a 321cc parallel twin-cylinder engine that produces 42 PS of power and 29.6 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. Meanwhile, Yamaha India is gearing up to launch the R3 in India to compete against the KTM RC 390 and Kawasaki Ninja 300 and will be brought down via the CKD route around the festive season.

Yamaha India is likely to launch the R3 in India instead of the R25 to rival the RC 390 & Ninja 300
