Volvo Cars to be the first to assemble a plug-in hybrid in India.
With the changing perceptions about electric cars in India, it is common knowledge that car manufacturers are looking at innovating their products to enter the electric and hybrid car segment. In an attempt to take the lead in this race, Volvo Cars India announced that it will be launching four new plug-in hybrid vehicles in the next three years.
The vehicles will be assembled in the company’s manufacturing unit in Bengaluru. Volvo had previously announced that all vehicles launched from 2019 will be either hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure battery-led electric powered. By 2025, the company has promised that half of the cars launched by the company will be fully battery-powered electric cars.
The Volvo XC 90 will be the first plug-in vehicle to be assembled in India. It is currently available in the India market via CBU. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is coupled with an electric motor that produces a combined power output of 407 HP and 640 Nm of torque.
According to the company, Indian roads see only 13 percent of cars making trips longer than 30 kms per day. Volvo is targeting those potential customers who are worried over the increasing pollution levels in the country, since a plug-in hybrid will be a highly sensible option for daily urban usage.
By 2019, Volvo plans to shift to only electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in India as part of its plans to scale up worldwide.
