Volkswagen To Launch Updated Cross Polo In India

The Cross Polo will be the next Volkswagen to get some updates after the Vento. The company is preparing to battle the Hyundai i20 Active with this offering.

Volkswagen ‘might’ add bits from the Euro model to our local Cross Polo

The Volkswagen Cross Polo was launched in India around two years back. The vehicle was the first entry-level crossover (after the Skoda Fabia Scout) to be launched here but it isn’t a proper crossover. The German automaker just added cosmetic bits to the handsome hatchback and launched the Cross Polo. The vehicle failed to win any buyers and later on rivals like Toyota, Fiat and Hyundai came up with their own crossovers like the Etios Cross, Avventura and i20 Active respectively. The Avventura too became a dud while some people did buy the Etios Cross. The i20 Active is still a new model so it remains to be seen how it is accepted by the market.

After the launch of the facelifted Vento, Volkswagen will bring in an update to the Cross Polo. It is expected to hit the markets before the end of the year. Volkswagen will add a couple of more features to the vehicle to differentiate it from its hatchback counterpart. The Cross Polo will also get bigger 16-inch wheels. We will be happy if Volkswagen incorporates some bits from the European version of the Cross in the desi model. The carmaker wants to give some tough competition to the Hyundai i20 Active and hence it will be interesting to see what all changes do they make.

As of now, the Volkswagen Cross Polo is offered with a 1.2-litre MPI petrol engine which is quite dull to drive and cannot match up to the vehicle’s capable dynamics. The diesel variants get a 1.5-litre TDI unit which is very peppy. Whether the new Cross Polo will come with mechanical changes or not hasn’t been confirmed yet but we really hope the manufacturer plonks in the 1.2-litre TSI engine. Putting in the TSI engine will also increase the price of the vehicle so Volkswagen might as well make the Cross Polo available only with the oil-burner.

In terms of features, the Cross Polo and Polo hatchback are quite equivalent
