Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus get safer with 6 airbags as standard across all trims
Volkswagen has announced a significant safety update for Taigun and Virtus, now featuring 6 airbags as standard across all trims. Interestingly, this enhancement comes without an increase in price, which is a good move in the Indian market. This move follows Skoda’s recent decision to make 6 airbags standard on Kushaq and Slavia.
Previously, the Taigun and Virtus offered 6 airbags only on their range topping Topline trims and GT variants. The new update extends this safety feature to the Comfortline and Highline trims, as well as special editions like the GT Edge, Sport and Sound Edition.
Despite the enhanced safety features, Volkswagen has maintained the pricing for both models. The entry-level Comfortline trim of the Taigun is currently available at a special offer price of Rs. 10.99 lakhs, which is Rs. 70,000/- lower than usual for a limited time. The Taigun’s prices range up to Rs. 20 lakhs. The Virtus is priced between Rs. 11.56 lakhs and Rs. 19.41 lakhs (all prices, ex-showroom). In contrast, Skoda implemented a marginal price increase with its update.
Both the Taigun and Virtus remain mechanically unchanged. They retain their 5-star Global NCAP safety ratings, originally achieved with just dual airbags. Standard safety features on both models include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), multi-collision braking system, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), brake assist and traction control.
In the competitive landscape, the Taigun faces rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate and Skoda Kushaq, all of which also offer 6 airbags as standard. However, the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and MG Astor do not. For the Virtus, competitors like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City and Skoda Slavia come with 6 airbags as standard, whereas the ageing Maruti Ciaz does not.
Volkswagen has also reported notable sales figures for both models, with over 1 lakh units sold collectively. The Taigun contributes 61 percent to this figure and around 40 percent of the total sales for both models are from the higher-spec GT variants.
