Volkswagen Taigun & Virtus facelifts to get cosmetic changes and new features

Volkswagen India is preparing for a major facelift for two of its core models, the Taigun and the Virtus, slated to arrive by late 2025 or early 2026. Despite some cosmetic and feature upgrades, the lack of significant mechanical changes may raise eyebrows in a market that is increasingly demanding innovation and cutting-edge technology.

The Taigun and Virtus, launched in 2021 and 2022, respectively, have been the German brand’s key offerings in India. Over time, Volkswagen has attempted to keep these models relevant by introducing various special editions and variants. The upcoming facelifts seem to focus more on aesthetics and features.

The exterior of both models will see sheet metal changes, primarily at the front, aligning them with Volkswagen’s newer global design language. However, these updates may not be enough to compete in a segment where rivals are pushing for more substantial improvements in terms of performance, features and value for money.

In terms of technology, the inclusion of ADAS and other new features might enhance the models’ appeal. The existing 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines, which comply with emission norms until 2027, are set to remain unchanged.

Volkswagen’s broader strategy for the Indian market is also shifting. Initially aiming to become an EV-only brand by 2028, the company has reconsidered its plans due to slower-than-expected EV adoption and changing market dynamics. The upcoming Taigun and Virtus facelifts, along with a sub-4-metre compact SUV based on the Skoda Kylaq, seem to reflect this revised approach.
