Volkswagen has unveiled the T-Roc concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The T-Roc concept showcases Volkswagen’s new approach towards compact SUVs. The T-Roc is based on the Golf models and sits below the Tiguan SUV in VW’s lineup. The concept car features a new design and interior line along with removable roof halves. The two-door concept combines the prowess of an all-wheel drive with the breeziness of a convertible.
The T-Roc Concept measures 4179 mm in length, 1831 mm in width and 1501 mm in height and is based on the MQB platform. The new two-seater, two-door concept can seat four in comfort. The most noticeable feature on the T-Roc concept is the Targa which essentially is removable roof. The roof is divided in two halves and Volkswagen says that with a few flicks, it can be removed and stored in the boot of the SUV. The concept rides on multi-part 19-inch alloy wheels.
The styling on the T-Roc takes the Volkswagen design language forward and looks rather evolutionary. The concept gets 3D radiator grille with large honey comb shaped openings. The front is high and wide, and gives an imposing presence to the SUV. The concept uses dual LED headlight and the sides feature LED daytime running lights that also double up as indicators.
The sides are very prominent with the pronounced wheel arches and the pillar-less doors that give the urban concept SUV a fun appeal. The rear on the other hand is typical VW with the wide boot lid design and squarish tail lights. The seats are upholstered in leather with a colour combination of blue and anthracite.
The cabin features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display tablet. You can choose from three driving modes namely street, off-road and snow. The concept also features digital instrument display and digital climate control. The touchscreen doubles as a display screen for cameras in off-road mode. The T-Roc concept is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine capable of churning out 181 HP and 380 Nm, mated to a 7-speed twin-clutch DSG transmission. The concept tips the scales at 1420 kgs and can do 0-100 km/hr in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/hr. Volkswagen says the concept returns an average of 4.9/100 km (20.7 km/l), while the CO2 emissions are restricted to 129 g/km.
Volkswagen has also equipped with the T-Roc with 4-Motion all-wheel drive system. The T-Roc concept will go into production soon, competing against the Nissan Juke, Kia Soul, MINI Countryman and the all-new Jeep Renegade in the segment. The company has not divulged any specific details on the production date of this SUV yet.
