Volkswagen is likely to launch the T-Cross SUV in India to rival the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.
Volkswagen is evaluating the prospects of entering the compact SUV segment in India with its T-Cross SUV. The T-Cross SUV will be based on the T-Cross Breeze concept showcased at the Geneva Motor Show last year.
The Volkswagen T-Cross is based on the MQB A0 platform (the same platform as the sixth-generation Polo). The production-spec T-Cross will be unveiled next year. The T-Cross Breeze concept measured 4133 mm in length and 1798 mm in width with a wheelbase of 2565 mm. Though the wheelbase is the same as the Polo’s, the compact SUV is 80 mm longer and 47 mm wider than the hatchback. Also, while the concept is a convertible SUV, the production version for India will be a regular car.
The T-Cross SUV is expected to be similar to the T-Cross Breeze concept in terms of dimensions but when it comes to features, the India-spec T-Cross SUV is expected to be different than the international version. The German giant is looking to source most of the car’s components from Indian vendors to keep a check on the costs.
With the brand’s 1.5-litre diesel engine getting discontinued by 2020, it remains to be seen what engines will the German automaker plonk in the T-Cross SUV. Since the T-Cross is based on the sixth-generation Polo, it could mean that Volkswagen is likely to launch the latter in the Indian market.
The Polo-maker has planned to double its sales over the next 5 years and this is possible only if the automaker works on its product portfolio.
