1974, the first ever Volkswagen Golf rolled out from the company’s home factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. Fast forward to today and the German automobile giant has sold 30 million units (3 crore) of the Golf worldwide, that is an impressive 2000 units every day since the day of launch! The 30 millionth unit is a Golf TDI BlueMotion which is powered by a highly efficient 1.6-litre 4-pot diesel engine which produces 110 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque, returning an insanely impressive mileage of 31.25 km/l (claimed of course).
On the occasion, Mr. Martin Winterkorn (Chairman, Volkswagen) accepted the 2013 Car of the Year award which has been won by the Golf. The premium hatchback has won multiple awards in its 39 years of existence, proving how good a vehicle it is, time and again. The Golf was conceptualized as a replacement for the Beetle and although the original car was aimed as a city runabout, today’s Golf is almost twice the size in dimensions and displacement.

Ironically India has contributed to 0 units out of those 30 million units sold (ok maybe around 200 units as there are some imported examples in our country). Volkswagen has no plans to launch the Golf in India anytime in the near future. The company recently launched the seventh generation Golf and brings out a new generation model in every 4-5 years. The Golf has not only remained a top seller for Volkswagen but even topped global sales charts for numerous years, rubbing shoulders on the top with Toyota’s Corolla for the numero uno spot several times.
