Volkswagen has issued a voluntary recall for 26,452 units of the Passat, Jetta and Beetle models globally that are powered by the 1.8-litre turbocharged engines. The German car maker informed the National Highway and Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the recall of the cars that were manufactured in between 1st February and 6th April 2014 and had a defect with the oil cooler in its automatic units. No word on whether Indian units are affected but there is a likely hood of the recall extending to the sub-continent.
The issue is limited to the vehicles that are powered by the 1.8-litre turbocharged engines. Volkswagen states that the vehicles feature faulty O-ring seals in the transmission air cooler. The O-ring does not completely seal between the oil-cooler and transmission resulting into fluid leakage. The leaking fluid thus had a potential of causing a fire. The German auto giant stated that the problem was caused because of the change in the material used by the supplier for manufacturing the component.
To fix the issue, Volkswagen will be replacing the defective O-ring with a new one, free of charge. Till date, no vehicle fires, mishaps or injuries have been reported. The company will get in touch will the owners affected and will arrange for the repairs at an authorized Volkswagen dealer. The company first came to know about the said issue in March, last month and the company informed its dealers to stop the sales of the 2014 models after completing the investigation.
