Just last month we saw Volkswagen launch the Polo GT TSI, which features a 4-cylinder, 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 105 PS of power, mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. Recently, the German automaker was caught testing the Polo with a diesel engine and GT TDI badging at the read. The uncamouflaged test mule had similar alloy wheels as the GT TSI, wearing the same grille with the GT badging. The vehicle seems to be on test with ARAI and thus the launch is not far.
The Volkswagen Polo GT TDI was spotted testing along with a Vento and Skoda Rapid, which hints that the new version of the Polo is likely to come with a 1.6-litre diesel engine currently doing duty on the Vento and Rapid, producing 105 BHP of power and 250 Nm of torque. Volkswagen has also been caught testing the 1.5-litre diesel engine of late, which would be feasible for the carmaker to enjoy the excise duty benefits, if the low displacement diesel engine gets featured in the Polo GT TDI.
The interiors and the equipment levels including ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) of the Polo GT TDI are expected to be the same as the GT TSI, coupled with the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. It will be a difficult task for the automaker to decide the price positioning, as the Polo GT TSI already comes with a hefty price tag of Rs. 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Polo GT TDI is expected to hit showrooms within a few weeks of time with a price tag of around Rs. 9 lakhs.
We spotted a black Volkswagen Polo with test plates and no badges on Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai last night. The vehicle was definitely a diesel as signified by the engine clatter.
