The German auto giant, Volkswagen has got big plans to become the largest automobile manufacturer in few years beating the likes of its competitors like General Motors and Toyota who are presently at the Number 1 and Number 2 spots. To achieve such targets Volkswagen is making a slew of changes in its product development strategy. One such is the introduction is the introduction of its latest MQB platform. It’s an all new platform developed by the company which means “Modularer Querbaukasten” in German. In English it translates to Modular Transverse Matrix and is the new flexible platform on which many Volkswagen and its other brand products will be developed.
According to some sources, one of the technologies that Volkswagen is also working on is Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) and reports state that this technology will be featuring in the 1.4 litre Volkswagen Polo engine. The Polo with this modern engine is likely to be launched by late 2012. Now you might be wondering what exactly is ACT? Well, to put it simply, it is a clever technology that monitors the amount of power being used by the vehicle as compared to the power being generated and accordingly shuts of 2 of the 4 cylinders (the 1.4 litre has 4 cylinders) by cylinder deactivation. This benefits in ways like lesser fuel consumption and thus lower emissions and also an increased engine life.
It is scheduled to debut first in the Audi A1 Sportback with implementation in other models like the Polo likely to follow later. This new engine is a part of the new Volkswagen EA211 engine family and the MQB platform. The utilization of the MQB platform will also be seen in models like the MK7 Golf, Audi A3, Beetle, Jetta, Scirocco, Passat, CC, Tiguan and Sharan. However, when this technology makes to India needs to be seen, since this will bear additional price.
