Built on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform that has been developed specifically for electric mobility, the ID.4 is only the second electric vehicle, after the ID.3, from the German auto major.
Looks-wise, the ID.4 is very modern with a clean design devoid of too many styling elements. It’s flowing design has been dictated by aerodynamics and the SUV has a drag coefficient of 0.28.
Upfront the grille is nowhere to be found, while the air dam below seems to have lots of its area blocked of, which is as well since it is an EV. The LED headlights have beneath them a couple of air channels.
The same simple design is seen at the sides and the distinctive feature is that the car comes in dual-tone paint theme. Large wheel rims, up to 21 inches in size, can be had with the EV. The taillights too are LED units.
With a length of 4580 mm, the ID.4 is sure to be spacious inside. Volkswagen has given the car a contemporary look with minimalist design. Physical buttons and switches are very limited, with all the functions done via two displays, the largest of which is the central screen measuring up to 12 inches.
Features such as “Hello ID.” voice control, ID.Light (strip near the windscreen), augmented reality head-up display (optional extra), Discover Pro navigation system, IQ.Drive assist and over-the-air updates will all be offered with the car, as revealed at the Volkswagen ID.4 unveil event.
Depending on the rear seat backrest’s position, the luggage compartment boasts a capacity from 543 to 1,575 litres. Further, the EV also has an electrically driven tailgate, a roof railing and a towing bracket.
Knowing that the ID.4 will enter a competitive SUV class, Volkswagen has given the car a 77 kWh battery pack, a 150 kW (204 PS) electric motor (positioned at the rear axle) and a range of up to 520 km (WLTP).
Top speed of the SUV is 160 km/hr and it can do the 0-100 km/hr in 8.5 seconds. The manufacturer claims that with a 210 mm ground clearance, the car also does well during gentle off-road excursions.
To be sold in the Europe, China and eventually in the USA, the Volkswagen ID.4 unveil marks the next step in the brand’s Transform 2025+ strategy that focuses solely on electric mobility. India launch not expected anytime soon.
