VW is set to launch the performance-focused Golf GTI & Tiguan R-Line
Volkswagen is preparing to introduce two key models to the Indian market in the second quarter of 2025—the Golf GTI and Tiguan R-Line. Both vehicles will be available as full imports, positioning them in the premium segment. While official pricing is yet to be confirmed, select dealerships have reportedly begun accepting unofficial bookings for the Golf GTI.
Golf GTI
The Volkswagen Golf GTI, an iconic hot hatch, is set to return to India, marking the second GTI-badged model in the country after the limited-run Polo GTI. The first batch will be restricted to 250 units, making it an exclusive offering for enthusiasts.
Engine and Performance
The upcoming Golf GTI will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 265 HP and 370 Nm of torque. It will come equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, driving power to the front wheels. The car is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed electronically capped at 250 km/hr.
Additional technical highlights include progressive steering, an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock and optional adaptive suspension, all contributing to its dynamic driving experience.
Design and Interior
The Golf GTI retains its signature sporty styling, featuring aggressive bumpers, GTI badging, red detailing and 18-inch alloy wheels. A dual-tone roof spoiler further accentuates its performance-focused look.
Inside, the hatchback is equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system running Volkswagen’s latest software. The system includes voice assistant capabilities with ChatGPT integration. Traditional GTI elements such as tartan-patterned seat upholstery and a red-pulsing push-start button add to the model’s character.
Tiguan R-Line
Alongside the Golf GTI, Volkswagen has confirmed the arrival of the Tiguan R-Line, the highest trim in the Tiguan lineup. This version emphasises a sportier design and a more premium feature set.
Exterior and Interior Features
The R-Line variant distinguishes itself with restyled front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler and R-Line-specific styling elements. It also features full-width LED light strips at the front and rear, as well as 19-inch alloy wheels. In international markets, a Black Style package is available, but its India availability remains uncertain.
Inside, the Tiguan R-Line comes with sports seats, a customisable ambient lighting system with 30 colour options and a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen, running VW’s MIB4 software with over-the-air update capabilities, is also part of the package.
Platform and Powertrain Expectations
The new Tiguan is underpinned by the MQB-Evo platform and is available globally with multiple engine options, including petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. While Volkswagen has yet to confirm the India-spec powertrain, it is likely that the model will feature a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 265 HP, paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
The current India-spec Tiguan is powered by a 190 HP, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and is priced at Rs. 38.17 lakhs (ex-showroom). The R-Line version, given its premium enhancements, is expected to be priced significantly higher.
Pricing and Market Positioning
- The Golf GTI is estimated to cost around Rs. 50 lakhs (ex-showroom), making it a competitor to the Mini Cooper S.
- The Tiguan R-Line, with its likely higher-spec powertrain and added features, will be positioned above the existing Tiguan, commanding a notable price premium.
Conclusion
With the launch of the Golf GTI and Tiguan R-Line, Volkswagen is targeting both performance enthusiasts and luxury SUV buyers in India. While the Golf GTI brings a legacy of hot-hatch excitement, the Tiguan R-Line enhances the brand’s SUV offerings with a sportier and more premium appeal. Given their exclusivity as fully imported models, both vehicles are expected to attract significant interest from Volkswagen’s loyal customer base and automotive enthusiasts alike.
The official pricing and variant details will be revealed closer to the launch in the April-June quarter of 2025.
