The Volkswagen Ameo will be offered with only the petrol engine initially while the updated diesel engine will be offered at a later stage.
Volkswagen had showcased the Ameo earlier this year and this compact sedan is based on the Polo. The Ameo shares its fascia with the Polo while the side profile is distinctly that of a compact sedan. The rear looks pretty much quirky while the insides again share most of the components with the Polo and Vento.
The Volkswagen Ameo is scheduled to be launched later this year. The vehicle will initially be offered in petrol guise while the diesel variants will be introduced at a later date. The petrol engine is the same unit that also powers the Polo and it is a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder motor producing 75 HP of power and 110 Nm of torque.
The engine will come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Polo and Vento get the 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine and this unit will also be offered on the Ameo later. This EA 189 engine is going to get an update very soon and it will come with bumped up power figures. Hence, Volkswagen will directly offer the updated engine on the Ameo.
With the power increase, the oil-burner will now produce 112 HP of power and the Ameo will be the first car to benefit from the updated engine. The Vento and Skoda Rapid will also get the updated motor then. The Ameo is going to be slotted in the compact sedan segment, competing with the Maruti Swift DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze and Ford Figo Aspire.
