The Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan has entered production at the company’s plant in Chakan, Pune. Volkswagen has decided to add a third shift at the plant in anticipation of huge demand for the vehicle.
The Volkswagen Ameo is a car which has a lot riding over its laurels to perform good in future to ensure the survival of the German brand in the country. The car has to face many odds in the current market scenario such as cut throat competition from established rivals and a downward trend of growth of the compact sedan segment itself. Thus, the car has started its journey in the Indian market and has finally entered production.
Volkswagen has started the production of the Ameo compact sedan at its Chakan plant in Pune. The first Ameo was equipped with the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder MPI engine and was painted in Blue Silk colour. The company plans to produce around 150 units of the Ameo daily and thus has decided to start a third shift at the plant in expectation of increased demand. Volkswagen has invested approximately Rs. 720 crore in the development of the Ameo.
The Volkswagen Ameo is the third mass market product from the German carmaker after its Vento sedan and the Polo hatchback. The car is very important for the company which has been battling the case of dwindling sales and a tarnished image due to the dieselgate scandal. Volkswagen is also giving special emphasis to the vehicle by equipping it with features such as dual front airbags and ABS as standard, cruise control, automatic rain sensing wipers and cornering lights.
The Ameo was revealed at the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi and bookings for the sedan have already started at all the company authorized dealerships. The car is expected be launched in June. The company has also launched an app for customers which enables them to visualize the car in 360 degrees and locate the nearest Volkswagen dealer. It will compete with the Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Maruti DZire and Tata Zest.
