Volkswagen had recently revealed the date of the unveiling of the production version of the Up! The German automaker will showcase the Up! in its production guise next month and is well on track to launch it in India. The Polo and Vento have got the volumes for Volkswagen India and to further increase market share, a small car is imperative. Thus the Volkswagen Up! will sit right below the Polo in the company’s line-up, helping the automaker to achieve two-fold sales in the country. The Up! will be priced between Rs. 3-5 lakhs and will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Santro.
Globally, the Volkswagen Up! has been showcased as a 2-door but for India, 4-doors are imperative. The VW Up! should use powertrains from the Polo and VW is in no mood to develop new small sized engines specially for the Up! The 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder petrol is frugal enough for the Up! and will be detuned to deliver atleast 20 kmpl of economy. Volkswagen might tap its global partner Suzuki for the 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder, K-Series motor but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
