Upcoming Mercedes electric cars to be manufactured in India at the company’s plant in Chakan.
Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz plans to manufacture electric cars in India at its facility in Chakan, Pune. Also the leader of the luxury car market in India, Mercedes feels that India will emerge as one of the key markets for EVs in the coming years, largely due to the government’s ambitious plan of making the country an all-electric car nation. However, the roadmap for running EVs is still not clear to the manufacturers in India.
The government is yet to lay down an ecosystem for operating EVs on roads and this mostly has to do with having a robust charging infrastructure to power the electric vehicles. But before that, the German automaker opines that the government should have a lenient import duty for the green cars before they achieve adequate volumes to encourage companies to invest in local manufacturing.
The company also adds that for a certain period the import duty has to be lowered, as this would prompt them (and even other car manufacturers) to launch EVs soon at reasonable prices. Mercedes will start global sales of a new electric sub-brand called EQ from next year and this step will mark the launch of a strong line-up of EVs. The company showcased the Concept EQ crossover at the 2018 Auto Expo.
