A ban on the sale of petrol and diesel passenger car from 2030 has been announced in the UK by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The government there has announced a 10-point plan under which falls the target of stopping sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.
It also aims to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles by making an investment of more than £2.8 billion (Rs. 27,523 crores) to promote the adoption of electric vehicles.
Further, £1.3 billion (Rs. 12,780 crores) will be spent on setting up charging points and £582 million (Rs. 5719 crores) will be given away as incentives to electric vehicle buyers.
Nearly £500 million (Rs. 4914 crores) will be spent in the next four years on the development and production of electric vehicle batteries.
However, petrol and diesel vehicles with hybrid systems that enable them to drive a significant distance with no carbon emissions coming out of the tailpipe will be allowed to be sold until 2035.
Post that, it is expected that only new electric cars and hydrogen cars will be allowed to be sold in the UK.
While the deadline seems too early, Norway beats the UK on that front, for it has set a 2025 deadline post which no new petrol or diesel cars will be sold there.
UK joins Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands in implementing the 2030 deadline for banning petrol and diesel-powered vehicles, while France aims to do the same by 2040.
If carmakers are to escape the fate of downing shutters permanently, immediate transition to hybrid vehicles is a must as it will provide them the know-how about electrification and eventually help them in manufacturing fully electric vehicles.
JLR, for instance, has already announced that it will be offering electrified options on all its new and refreshed products and hopes to complete the transition to electric and hybrid vehicles before 2030.
Similarly, Bentley too has come up with its own plan of becoming an EV brand come 2030 under its Beyond100 strategy.
The Indian government has not set any timeline as of now, but is expected to come up with some long-term plan that will push petrol and diesel powered cars towards extinction.
