TVS is testing the Draken X21 in India. The concept bike was showcased at 2014 Auto Expo and the next generation Apache is said to be based on the Draken concept.
Things are getting really hot in the entry-level high performance motorcycle segment. Most brands have either released or are soon releasing a product in this segment. Bikes like the KTM Duke 200 and Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS have been very successful in the market and this has made others serious about this segment. Trying to cash in on this surge in demand and in order to update the ageing Apache series, TVS will be launching the next generation Apache with a 250cc engine. The new Apache will be based on the Draken X21 concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo last year.
The TVS Draken concept displayed at the biennial event had some radical looking design elements such as a dull gold finish trellis frame which looked striking, full LED lights and bar-end mirrors. The fit and finish of the bike was fantastic and it looked like an European product. Recently, the Draken has been spotted testing in India which means TVS is serious about launching the Apache 250 in the future. The test mule doesn’t feature any of the striking styling elements which makes us believe that TVS is testing the engine and certain other components currently to avoid gaining attention.
The Draken concept featured a 249.2cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 38.5 BHP of power and 23 Nm of torque. TVS claimed that the bike would return a healthy 33.3 km/l of mileage. We believe that if the Indian bike maker comes up with the Apache 250 running the same engine in a lower state of tune, it would give a tough fight to its competitors considering it would be aggressive priced yet be powerful. Since the current Apache 180 comes with an option of ABS, we expect TVS to launch the Apache 250 with ABS as an option. If bought to the market soon, it stands a chance to be a great success for TVS. We expect a lot of interesting bikes from TVS’ stable in the future considering its partnership with BMW Motorrad.
