The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V gets some worthy upgrades with a high power-to-weight ratio and a highly competitive price tag to take on most rivals. It is also offered with fuel injection while dual-channel ABS and Pirelli tyres are optional.
Finally bringing an end to all rumours, speculations and a plethora of spy shots, TVS Motor Company has officially launched the much awaited all-new Apache RTR 200 4V in India with prices starting at Rs. 88,990/- for the base carb, non-ABS model with TVS tyres (ABS version to be available later), the top-end model costs Rs. 1.15 lakhs (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The flagship offering gets major upgrades after an eight-year gap, belting out better power figures from a new engine while also getting major mechanical as well as styling upgrades. A rival to a ton of sporty offerings in the 150-200cc segment, here is everything you need to know about the all-new Apache.
Design – Based on a double cradle frame, the 2016 TVS Apache RTR 200 4V boasts of a completely new design language coming from the X21-Draken concept, looking sharp and agile from all possible angles. The nose down, tail up design works well here complimented by the large sculpted fuel tank flanked by fenders, large engine cowl and split seats. The headlight cluster while similar to the outgoing model looks leaner now and gets LED DRLs.
Other interesting bits include clip-on handlebars, wavy alloy wheels, the twin-tip exhaust muffler while standing out are those golden front forks. The new Apache 200 also uses an all-digital instrument cluster loaded with information inclusive of a gear indicator, shift light, service reminder among the usual bits. The bike also gets a mobile charging provision, which is certainly an appreciable addition.
Engine – Power output on the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V comes from a newly developed 197.5cc single-cylinder, air and oil cooled, SOHC engine with 4-valves, tuned to produce 20.5 PS at 8500 RPM (for the carb model), 21 PS (for the fuel-injected model) with 18.1 Nm of torque at 7000 RPM, paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The motor is a re-bored version of the RTR 180’s unit with a bigger 66 mm bore and 57.8 mm stroke and idles at 1400+200 RPM. The Apache 200 only gets electric start, missing out on the kick completely. In terms of performance figures, the Apache 200 does 0-60 km/hr run in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 km/hr. Compared to the rivals, the Apache 200 is 4.6 km/hr faster in 3 seconds, TVS claims.
Performance – The TVS Apache 200 does a top speed of 128 km/hr for the carb model while the FI model does 129 km/hr. According to TVS, 0-60 km/hr comes up in 3.95 seconds for the carb model while the FI version does the same in 3.90 seconds. 0-100 km/hr comes up in a claimed 12 seconds. 0-2 seconds makes the Apache 200 reach 38 km/hr.
Mechanicals – The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V uses telescopic forks up front and a monoshock suspension setup (sourced from KYB) at the rear while braking performance comes from a 270 mm front and a 200 mm rear petal disc brakes while there is dual-channel ABS available as optional on both the carb and FI variants. The street-fighter rides on 90/90/17 front and 130/70/17 rear TVS Remora tyres (developed for this bike), all of which contribute to a kerb weight of 148 kgs (0.5 kgs more for the FI model). Pirelli tyres are also offered as an option.
Tech Specs – The TVS Apache 200 has a length of 2050 mm, height of 1105 mm and width of 790 mm, it has a wheelbase of 1353 mm and the ground clearance is 180 mm. The seat height is 800 mm and the fuel tank capacity is 12-litres (2.5-litres reserve). The motorcycle has 60/55W h4 bulb with all-time on LED position lamp.
While the 2016 TVS Apache RTR 200 4V may not have lived up to the speculations, it does turn out to get appreciable upgrades nevertheless. The street-fighter gets some interesting goodies from partner BMW including the cooling system while a healthy power-to-weight ratio is definitely on the cards. TVS is offering the new Apache RTR 200 4V in six colour options – red, black, matte black, white, yellow and silver while the model is locking horns with the Bajaj Pulsar AS 200, Yamaha FZ V2.0, Honda CB Hornet 160R and the likes. The company has invested Rs. 300 crores in the development of the new model.
