The TVS Akula 310 is being considered for a limited edition run with full carbon-fibre fairing. The Akula 310 was unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The TVS Akula 310 is expected to launch by early next year

The holy marriage of TVS with BMW was celebrated by enthusiasts all around the country as the joint effort of these two companies was expected to bear a beautiful fruit for bike lovers everywhere. The first project which was jointly developed by both the companies was the Akula 310 Concept sportsbike which was appreciated by a whole lot of people for its carbon-fibre fairing which looks sinister. Now upon seeing unprecedented response from the general public, TVS is now planning to launch the carbon-fibre faired avatar of the Akula 310 for limited production.

The TVS Akula 310 Concept was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo with full carbon-fibre body fairing, 6-speed gearbox and a bolt-on aluminium frame. The TVS designers proclaimed that around 60% of the concept bike’s elements will make it to the production version. The party-piece of the bike, the carbon-fibre fairing, was said to be just show-piece and had no structural integrity at that time. The motorcycle is expected to be launched later this year or early 2017.

The full carbon-fibre faired TVS Akula will be a big challenge for the homegrown automaker as it has little or no knowledge of the exotic material. This is where the German manufacturer BMW enters the picture as it is the leading body on carbon-fibre development and production. The automaker learned a lot about the super light and super stiff material while developing the i3 and i8 electric vehicles, which enabled BMW to bring down production costs and improve quality. The development of the Akula 310 motorcycle and this carbon-fibre exercise will be a great learning experience for TVS itself.

The TVS Akula Concept showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo shares its mechanicals with the soon to be launched BMW G310R naked street motorcycle. The concept uses a bolt-on aluminium subframe (to be replaced by production time), USD forks, radial callipers, a force fed airbox, a quick shift 6-speed transmission and a neat gyrocam on the tail piece. Upon launch, the new TVS racing bike will compete against the KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Yamaha R3.

Update – The original story has been updated and the company isn’t planning a limited run of the TVS Akula 310 with carbon fibre fairing. In fact, the display bike had the fairing design only for aesthetic appeal and not for structural strength. TVS made the carbon fibre of the Akula in house.
