Triumph Motorcycles finally made their way to India on 28th November 2013. The company launched the following 10 motorbikes here – Bonneville, Bonneville T100, Speed Triple, Street Triple, Thruxton and Daytona 675R which are locally assembled and the Rocket III, Tiger Explorer, Tiger 800 XC and Thunderbird Storm which are completely imported. The Triumph India range is priced between Rs. 5.7 to Rs. 20 lakhs. Triumph has set up its dealerships in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad for now. Now, we bring you all the details you need to know about the Triumph Tiger 800 XC and the Triumph Tiger Explorer.
Triumph Tiger 800 XC – The Triumph Tiger 800 XC is a bike designed for some off-roading. It is derived from the previous Tiger 800 and is more rugged. The most important aspect of off-roading on a motorbike is the suspension and that’s why it comes with a suspension which has a long travel range of 220 mm at the front and 215 mm at the rear. The motorcycle also comes with Showa upside down forks along with an adjustable monoshock which you can adjust depending on whether you’re riding on the road or off it. The 800 XC comes fitted with a pair of two-piston sliding callipers at the front along with 308 mm discs. The rear comes with a single-piston calliper with a 255 mm disc. ABS is standard but you can switch it off while off-roading. The 800 XC also comes with huge 21-inch wheels at the front which aid off-roading.
The Tiger 800XC comes with a three-cylinder engine which produces 95 PS of power and 79 Nm of torque! The powerplant is mated to a 6-speed transmission. The 800 XC also has a very hi-tech security system. Basically they have installed a small chip in the key and if someone tries to switch on the bike using some other duplicate key, the bike would simply get immobilised. We think this a very useful feature especially in our country where expensive vehicles get a lot of unwanted attention.
The Triumph Tiger 800 XC gives a fuel efficiency of 21.08 km/l in the urban riding cycle. Since this bike is aimed at off-roading and other adventures, the manufacturer has provided a slew of luggage options like tank-bags, tail-bags, top case, etc. It comes with a very tall and upright riding position which prevents fatigue and the seat height can be adjusted from 845 mm to 865 mm. This motorbike is priced at Rs. 12 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). It comes with a standard 2-year warranty with unlimited mileage and it needs to be serviced every 10,000 kms.
Triumph Tiger Explorer – This motorbike is also built for adventure riding and it features a very robust build quality. The Tiger Explorer comes with a tubular frame which is stronger than the one on other Triumphs to withstand heavy usage. The suspension is really strong and it comes with a travel range of 190 mm. The rear suspension has a range of 194 mm. This type of suspension can take all sorts of abuse along with providing great riding comfort. Stopping power is excellent with two 305 mm discs at the front and a single disc at the rear. The wheels are 17-inches and 19-inches at the rear and front respectively and they are made to handle all types of surfaces.
Triumph provides traction control as a standard feature so that you don’t need to worry while riding on slippery conditions. To increase fuel efficiency and reduce fatigue while doing long journeys on highways, you can use the in-built cruise control system. This motorbike also comes with a similar security system like the 800 XC. Since this bike is made for adventure travels, there are high chances that your phone or GPS system might run low on power. Worry not because Triumph has fitted a 12V charging point in the bike!
The Tiger Explorer has a 1215cc three-cylinder engine that is capable of churning out 137 PS of power and 121 Nm of torque. There is also a ride-by-wire throttle system. The engine is matched to a 6-speed tranny which has a tough shaft final drive. The seat height can be adjusted according to the rider’s preferences. The Explorer provides a fuel efficiency of 16.15 km/l and comes with a standard 2-year warranty with unlimited mileage. Service interval is the same as the 800 XC i.e. 10,000 kms. It is priced at Rs. 17.90 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
