Toyota Vios ASEAN NCAP testing has resulted in an impressive score of 5 stars.
The latest batch of cars to go under the hammer of ASEAN NCAP consisted of the Suzuki Carry, Chery Transcab, Toyota Yaris and the Toyota Vios. Expected to be launched in 2018, the Toyota Vios is an India-bound C-segment sedan which has performed beautifully scoring 5 stars in the crash tests with a cumulative score of 81.63 points. The made-in-Thailand test car will be sold in southeast Asian countries including Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos.
Tipping the scales at 1115 kgs, the Toyota Vios used for testing was equipped with 7 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ABS and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The car scored 44.70 points for adult protection and 21.66 points for child occupant protection. Presence of onboard safety aids further improved the score by 15.28 points. Sold with a smaller engine as the Toyota Yaris Ativ, the Vios had scored 4 stars in 2012.
In the current tests involving the 2018 model, the car fared very well in side impact tests. Driver protection in frontal impact tests was found to be good for head and knee area and adequate for lower legs and chest region. In the same tests, protection to the front passenger’s right leg was termed as marginal. It remains to be seen whether Toyota uses similar structure and equipment for its India-bound model or not. Meanwhile, the Yaris Ativ and Yaris also got a 5-star rating.
With heavy localisation in mind to arrive at aggressive prices, Toyota plans to launch the Vios by the festive season next year. The Japanese automaker might showcase the India-spec version at the upcoming Auto Expo in February. Rivalling the Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Honda City, the car will draw power from a 1.5-litre dual VVT-i petrol engine which is capable of producing 108 BHP of power and 140 Nm of torque. While there is no word from the company on a fuel-burner option, it is expected that the Corolla’s 1.4-litre diesel unit will be added at a later stage.
