Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder unveiled, sports strong hybrid and all-wheel-drive technologies
After a long wait, Toyota has unveiled its much-awaited Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV. Developed as a truly global product along with Maruti Suzuki, it will take the fight head-on against the current C+ and D segment cars especially Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Bookings are currently underway for a token amount of Rs. 25,000/- at all Toyota dealerships. Customers can also book online at www.toyotabharat.com/online-booking/.
At the front, we can immediately notice the peculiar eyebrow DRLs. The twin-strip units, fuse with the unique crystal acrylic bonnet lip that sports chrome garnishes. The Toyota logo is at the centre.
The car nearly lacks a top grille while the ventilation is fully taken care by the massive trapezoidal honeycomb grille at the bottom which has the number plate at the centre.
At the bottom of the bumper, there’s a large skid plate which also doubles up as the bumper element. It gets a metallic ash finish. There are roof rails at the top.
Like the Hyundai Creta and Tata Harrier among others, the headlamps are placed as separate units on the bumper and they are angular in shape though quite small in size. The LED units have large chrome surrounds.
At the sides, window lines get a chrome finish and the B pillars are blacked out for a cohesive design. The ORVMs get integrated turn indicators. The door handles are the usual pull-type ones and the front doors house the bold ‘Hybrid’ tags.
The y-shaped dual-tone 17-inch alloy wheels are diamond-cut units. At the bottom, a matte black cladding runs throughout the perimeter of the SUV, even through the wheel arches.
At the rear, the SUV features a hunchback design. It gets a large chrome tail gate strip that also holds the Toyota logo. There’s a trapezoidal recess below the tail gate strip with a body colour surround housing the rear number plate.
The tailgate strip ends in the double C-shaped LED tail lights that offer a sporty look at the rear. On both the sides of the number plate, there is a rectangle recess that sports the reflectors and reversing light.
The rear bumper features bold creases with a broad metallic ash skid plate at the centre. The overall rear detailing looks busy and the reversing light/reflectors housings look quite odd.
The car comes with 7 monotone and 4 dual-tone colours. The monotone ones are Cave Black, Sportin Red, Speedy Blue, Enticing Silver, Cafe White, Gaming Grey, and Midnight Black. The dual-tone ones are Black roof with Cafe White, Sportin Red, Enticing Silver, and Speedy Blue.
On the inside, the SUV nearly gets the same 9-inch free-standing infotainment system as the Glanza.
The Smart Play Cast display is intuitive and packs in a lot of features like Toyota iConnect connected car tech, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360 degree camera, average fuel economy, range, clock, custom wallpapers, etc.
The iConnect in itself offers more than 55 features including smartwatch connectivity, advanced voice control, remote vehicle ignition start/stop, remote AC control, find my car, stolen vehicle tracking, remote mobilizer, vehicle health, etc.
The SUV further features a large panoramic sunroof, ambient lights, wireless charging, head-up display, ventilated leather seats, hill hold and hill desent control, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, TPMS, cruise control, front seat PT/FL, vehicle stability control, reclining rear seats, rear AC vents with USB charging ports, and all-wheel disc brake.
Coming to the overall design of the interiors, the dashboard features a premium-looking stitched leather finish while the hexagonal side AC vents get piano black surrounds. The leather finish is carried forward to the door pads as well.
The inside door handles get chrome finish and they are surrounded by a brushed silver element which also runs on both the sides of the centre console and horizontally at the centre of the dashboard.
Built on the international Suzuki Vitara’s Global C Platform, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder shares its engines and powertrains with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Vitara.
There are 2 engines on offer – the Maruti Suzuki-sourced 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine with mild hybrid tech called Neo Drive and Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA engine featuring Toyota Hybrid System (THS) and e-drive transmission.
The TNGA engine exerts 91 HP and 122 Nm while the motor puts out 79 HP and 141 Nm. The engine and motor’s combined output is 114 HP. There’s a pure EV mode where the car can be forced to run on electric power alone.
In the Neo Drive, the K series engine puts out the same 101 HP and 135 Nm as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Brezza and comes mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed autobox. It also gets a first-in-the-segment all-wheel-drive system.
Toyota is offering a customised range of 66 accessories designed exclusively for the Urban
Cruiser Hyryder.
The new SUV comes with a warranty of 3 years or 1,00,000 km with an option of extension up to 5 years or 2,20,000 km, 3 years free roadside assistance, attractive financial schemes, and 8 year or 1,60,000 km warranty on hybrid battery.
