Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder All-wheel Drive might be Suzuki’s All Grip that features in Vitara, Jimny, and the likes
With just hours left from the global debut of the all new Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the Japanese maker has confirmed that the upcoming SUV will sport an all-wheel drive system. It is expected to get featured in select non-hybrid variants of the car.
As the Hyryder is built on Suzuki’s Global C platform, the all-wheel drive would, most probably, be Suzuki’s renowned All Grip tech. But, it’s still not confirmed whether it would be the fourth generation Vitara’s All Grip Select or current Jimny’s All Grip Pro.
As All Grip Pro is already getting manufactured in India for the export Jimny, we believe it has found its way to the Hyryder. As far as differences between the 2 go, All Grip Select allows driver to choose from 4 driving modes (Auto, Sport, Snow, and Lock).
The electronically controlled 4-wheel-drive system with selectable driving mode uses a simple push-and-turn dial so the driver can experience different driving styles depending on the road surfaces or conditions.
On the other hand, All Grip Pro is a part-time 4WD that positions a transfer case between the driveshafts running from the front and rear differentials, and uses it to switch between 2WD and 4WD as required.
When in 4WD, the system directly connects the front and rear wheels, making it possible to distribute engine power to all four tyres evenly and without loss. It’s a simpler system which also got featured in the yesteryear Maruti Suzuki Gypsy as well.
The much-hyped Hyryder will get a 1.5-litre petrol-only engine with a mild and strong hybrid powertrain. While the mild hybrid system will get featured on the base to mid variants, the stronger system will find its way to the top models.
We have come to know that the mild hybrid exerts a maximum power of 101.64 HP which is exactly same as that of the recently introduced K15C engine on 2022 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It features Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology.
The strong hybrid, on the other hand, exerts 114.41 HP and will come mated to a eCVT gearbox.
This project is a joint effort of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota wherein the partners will make 2 premium SUVs 1 for each with segment-best features and strong-hybrid powerplant to take the fight against Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
