Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Revealed, Suzuki e Vitara Cousin

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV looks similar to the Suzuki e Vitara but with unique styling

Toyota has officially revealed the production-spec Urban Cruiser EV, a vehicle that will share significant features with the Suzuki e Vitara. The Urban Cruiser EV is set to make its public debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show this January, offering a glimpse into Toyota’s future in the electric SUV market.

Design Evolution and Dimensions

The Urban Cruiser EV, based on the Suzuki eVX concept, has undergone several design changes in its transition from concept to production. While retaining elements like thin headlights and a minimalist grille, the final version has adopted slightly more conventional proportions. The front bumper now features a less angular design, and the sides are accentuated by black plastic cladding, lending it a rugged SUV aesthetic. Rear styling elements include elongated tail-lights, a roof spoiler, and a robust bumper, which closely resemble those on the Suzuki e Vitara.

In terms of dimensions, the Urban Cruiser EV measures 4285 mm in length, 1800 mm in width and 1640 mm in height, with a 2700 mm wheelbase. These specifications make it marginally larger than the Suzuki e Vitara. Despite a 15 mm reduction in length and a 20 mm decrease in width compared to the concept, the Urban Cruiser’s height has increased by 20 mm. A turning radius of 5.2 meters ensures manoeuvrability in urban settings.

Battery, Motors and Performance

The Urban Cruiser EV will be available with two battery options: a 49kWh unit and a 61kWh unit. The 49kWh version is equipped with a front-axle-mounted motor generating 144 HP and 189 Nm of torque, while the 61kWh version features a more powerful 174 HP motor with the same torque output. An AWD variant, exclusive to the larger battery, includes an additional 65 HP motor on the rear axle, bringing the total output to 184 HP and 300 Nm of torque.

To enhance its off-road capability, the AWD version includes hill-descent control and a ‘Trail Mode’ for tackling rough terrain. Both battery options use lithium-iron phosphate cells, highlighting Toyota’s focus on durable and efficient energy storage.

Interior Features and Technology

The cabin of the Urban Cruiser EV mirrors that of the Suzuki e Vitara, featuring a clean and functional design. Key highlights include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Additional features include an electronic parking brake with auto hold, wireless phone charging, single-zone climate control and drive modes.

Higher trims will offer premium amenities such as a JBL audio system, a powered driver’s seat and a sunroof. Rear seats provide enhanced flexibility with sliding and reclining functions and a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration.

Safety and Advanced Features

Toyota has equipped the Urban Cruiser EV with a comprehensive safety suite. This includes six airbags, a 360-degree camera and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that offers features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and a pre-collision system. These additions underline Toyota’s commitment to providing a secure and tech-forward driving experience.

Launch Timeline and Availability

While Toyota has not disclosed the exact timeline for the Urban Cruiser EV’s launch in India, it is expected to arrive in late 2025. Manufactured in Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, the Urban Cruiser EV will cater to both domestic and international markets. Pricing details for the UK market will be revealed in the third quarter of 2025.
