The all new 2012 Toyota Camry is finally coming to India. After being spotted multiple times in and around Bangalore with heavy camouflage, the company has confirmed its plans to officially put the new Camry on sale in the country. The 2012 Toyota Camry is an vast improvement over its predecessor and Toyota claims its the best Camry yet. Toyota has also decided to dump the CBU route in lieu of a more cost effective CKD route for the new Camry. Expect prices to start around Rs. 20 lakhs, giving competition to the Honda Accord and Skoda Superb. Details on the variants are still not clear but Toyota is most likely to use a petrol engine inside the new Camry.
Toyota might be showing some seriousness by going the CBU route but without a diesel engine, the new Camry does not stand a chance infront of executives like the Volkswagen Passat which have excellent oil burners powering them. Due to the mounting structure of the Fortuner’s diesel engine, the company cannot use the same engine in the Camry. But what the Japanese automaker can do, is to get a competent diesel motor via the CKD route which would make the Camry an instant hit among the diesel loving Indians. Till then, the Camry will be mostly be bought by hotels and tourist taxis.
