Taking a major leap forward, Toyota has finally launched the 11th generation Corolla Altis in India today, priced from Rs. 11.99 lakh onwards. Competing in the D-segment sedan space, the Toyota Corolla has been one of the most trusted names when it comes to comfortable sedans and the new generation model only promises to be better not only in terms of design, but also in terms of interior comfort, electronic gadgetry and powertrain as well.
Certainly one of the most talked about changes on the 11th generation Corolla Altis has been the design. A giant leap of progress, Toyota shed its inhibitions of being conservative and boring and has come out of the box with a rather outlandish and futuristic design. The front fascia is certainly the most striking with a new Furia themed chrome induced grille that integrates in the redesigned sweptback headlight cluster. The side profile is far more confident with strong shoulder lines running across till the rear fender. The rear on the other hand is a neatly done boot-lid that gets wraparound tail lights with a chrome lip in the centre.
Overall, the 2014 Toyota Corolla looks new from possibly every angle and exudes a far more confident and striking body language than its predecessor. The strong profile continues on the inside as well with the cabin receiving distinctive styling that looks smart and cool. Finished in black and beige, the cabin features a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Navigation, USB, AUX, SD Card and Bluetooth connectivity.
Compared to its predecessor the new Corolla Altis is 100 mm longer (reflecting in the wheelbase as well), which translates into improved legroom at the front and rear. The rear seats are also comfortable and will easily accommodate 3 passengers for long journeys. In terms of space, the boot space capacity is limited to 470 litres, while you get cubby holes all around the car for storing small things. The tech list on the Corolla includes auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, smart key and driver side one touch up/down mirrors.
In terms of powertrain, the 2014 Toyota Corolla is powered by a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder VVT-i engine that produces 140 PS at 6400 RPM and 173 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM, mated to a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed CVT automatic transmission. Diesel power comes from a humble 1.4-litre D4-D engine producing 88.4 PS at 3800 RPM and 205 Nm of torque between 1800-2400 RPM, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. In terms of safety tech, the Corolla gets immobiliser, dual front airbags, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist.
Toyota is offering a special accessory package for the Corolla Altis, called “The Benchmark Collection” which has accessories like chrome packages and daytime running lights. Toyota had already commenced the bookings of the new Corolla Altis months earlier and will commence deliveries now onwards. Toyota has sold 88,500 units of the Corolla in the Indian market, since its launch in 2003 The Corolla Altis competes against the Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Jetta, and the likes in the segment.
