Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will be imported to India as a CBU model
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is set to make its return to the Indian market in the latter half of 2025. This latest generation SUV, which debuted globally last year, is being rolled out in various international markets.
Enhanced Design and Performance
Codenamed JC250, the new Land Cruiser Prado is built on a ladder frame architecture, a hallmark of its durability and off-road capability. Toyota has focused on improving the vehicle’s robustness, with the chassis now 50% more rigid compared to the outgoing model. The body-on-frame assembly is also around 30% stiffer, contributing to better stability both on and off the road.
The SUV’s dimensions have slightly increased, with a length of 4920 mm and a height of 1870 mm, along with a 2850 mm wheelbase. These updates have resulted in a roomier interior, enhancing comfort for occupants. Inside, the Prado now features a redesigned cabin, boasting more advanced tech and features. Highlights include multi-zone climate control, premium leather upholstery and a wraparound digital display integrated with Toyota’s latest infotainment system. The new Prado also shares some switchgear with the Land Cruiser 300, maintaining a cohesive design language across the range.
Off-Road Focus and Upgraded Features
One of the key selling points of the new Land Cruiser Prado is its enhanced off-road capability. Toyota has incorporated several upgrades to improve its performance in rugged terrains. The SUV now offers increased wheel articulation and an upgraded Multi-Terrain Monitor system, which provides real-time feedback to the driver when navigating difficult terrain. A unique feature is the disconnecting front anti-roll bar, which can be disengaged via a dashboard switch to maximise wheel articulation on challenging off-road courses.
Powertrain Options
The new Land Cruiser Prado will come with different powertrain options depending on the market. For European, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Australian markets, the Prado will be powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine, the same unit that drives the Toyota Fortuner in India. By 2025, this engine will be paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, providing better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Toyota has already started testing this mild-hybrid diesel system in its Hilux pickup.
In other regions, such as North America and the Middle East, the Prado is offered with a 2.4-litre petrol engine with a hybrid powertrain. This engine is already in use across various Toyota and Lexus models worldwide and is known for its balance between power and efficiency.
Indian Market and Competition
When the Land Cruiser Prado returns to India, it will be introduced as a Completely Built Unit, similar to the Land Cruiser 300. Toyota is expected to position the Prado as a premium off-roader, targeting competitors like the Land Rover Defender, which is its main rival in global markets. With its blend of rugged off-road capabilities and luxury features, the Prado is poised to attract a niche segment of Indian buyers looking for a versatile SUV that can handle both city driving and tough terrains.
