Volume based charts in the Indian passenger car market has more or less remained the same. What has been different though is the outcome, when it filters down to value (top end variant price multiplied by volumes)
In terms of volume, it’s pretty much a Hyundai and Maruti all the way. But the Toyota Innova, in terms of pure value, absolutely trounces every other product. It is followed by the Maruti Swift DZire, Hyundai Creta and Grand i10. The newly launched Renault Kwid sits at the bottom of the chart.
According to car marketers, value proposition is of paramount importance as buyers are looking beyond their cheap and cheerful possession. The top 10 cars based on volume command 66% of total passenger vehicle sales and the value proposition model is flogged even more as a good 60% of customers are now opting for top-end variants.
Car marketers claim that customers are now looking for lifestyle choices. A key official from Hyundai said that brands which can deliver in value can grow in volume. The auto market is seeing a transition from price driven brands to value based proposition to brand promising lifestyle quotient. Hyundai’s 60% sales are from top-end variants.
Apart from the old warhorses say the Maruti Wagon R and Alto, the value table witnessed the entry of the Renault Kwid and Toyota Innova Crysta. The Innova Crysta as stated by a key official from Toyota India, has a waiting period of two months across various locations and near about 65% of their customers are existing Innova customers.
We at MotorBeam, had stated that Toyota has an equivalent number of segment leaders when compared to Maruti and the domination of the Innova Crysta in the value chart justifies the same. Toyota’s QDR philosophy proves to be instrumental in shaping the success that it has gathered.
