Toyota Fortuner diesel hybrid and Innova diesel hybrid under development as the Japanese carmaker plans to introduce the new GD hybrid engines in 2022.
The GD series engines are currently used by the Fortuner and Innova along with a few other models sold globally. This includes 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV and 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV engines.
The internal codename for this new diesel hybrid powertrain project is 188D and the launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.
The Japanese carmaker has mastered the hybrid technology with many cars including Prius, Camry, etc. but the diesel hybrid tech is quite uncommon and a new project for the company to work on.
The Toyota Fortuner with a diesel hybrid engine will definitely benefit with a significant boost in fuel economy along with lower emissions. Same is the case with the Toyota Innova Crysta.
However, the hybrid tech will make these hefty vehicles even more heavy and the increase in cost will make these Toyotas out of reach for many if launched in India.
While it will be interesting to see the blue Toyota logo on the Fortuner and Innova in the near future, there will be a lot more tech on offer with the next generation models.
You can expect to see ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), new safety features, latest tech and radical design changes in the next iteration of these vehicles.
