Toyota has confirmed electric car for the Indian market co-developed by Maruti Suzuki.
Toyota and Suzuki have collaborated to strengthen both the Japanese carmakers’ alliance. With this alliance they will be sharing technologies for future and existing products. They kickstarted the cross-badging strategy with the launch of Toyota Glanza, which is a re-badged Maruti Baleno. Toyota has now confirmed electric car for India that will be co-developed by Maruti.
Shigeki Terashi, Toyota’s chief technology officer has confirmed that India will be one of the countries they have in mind for BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) and they want to introduce them at an early stage along with Maruti.
We can expect Toyota to introduce their electric car by 2021 in India. Toyota’s electric car is likely to share its platform with the Maruti Wagon R based EV. Both the cars will share major components in order to keep the costs in check. Maruti Suzuki is already testing the Wagon R EV since a long time.
The electric car from Toyota and Maruti will get high level of localisation to keep the prices low. Also, the FAME II government scheme will further subsidise the pricing to make it available to a wide audience.
