Is Toyota Corolla Making A Comeback In India?

The Corolla brand has been well-received by Indians

Toyota has filed a trademark application for the title ‘Corolla Quest’ recently in India, spurring speculations about the relaunch of the famous moniker.

Could it be that the Corolla name is set to be used for the rebadged Maruti Ciaz? Or might Toyota have plans to launch an entry-level version of the discontinued Corolla Altis under the Corolla Quest moniker?

Speculation is rife that the rebadged Ciaz will be called the Toyota Belta, but the Japanese firm has not as much as given a hint about it until now.

But, if it does decide to call it the Corolla Quest, it might ruffle some feathers by doing so, for the Corolla name is associated with a premium sedan in India.

On the other hand, demand for Toyota’s global products are on the rise in India, with many online automotive communities expressing their concerns about the carmaker’s move to sell rebadged Maruti cars here.

If the Toyota Corolla Quest trademark is indeed to be used for a proper global product from the carmaker’s portfolio, then it would actually mean the reintroduction of the Corolla Altis in the market.

Currently retailed in places including South Africa, the Corolla Quest comes powered by the well-known 1.8-litre petrol motor good for 138 HP and 173 Nm of torque. Gearbox choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT.

Apart from a redesigned front bumper and updated lighting units, the Corolla Quest looks identical to the Altis and the same goes for the interior as well, for nothing has changed apart from the theme.

However, it does come equipped with part leather seats and a good number of features like the 7-inch infotainment screen, electrochromatic IRVM, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, cruise control, and so on.

It is expected that the Corolla Quest would help Toyota fill in the void between the Innova Crysta and the Belta (after the latter gets introduced), for the Yaris is set to be discontinued from the market.

An official confirmation with regard to the matter is expected soon from Toyota. Until then, let the speculations run wild.
