Toyota’s electric vehicle production will commence next year, 400+ km of range

Toyota has announced plans for a new battery-electric SUV set to arrive in 2025, leveraging its collaboration with Suzuki. This upcoming electric SUV, modelled after the Maruti Suzuki eVX, will be produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing facility beginning in spring (March to May) of next year. The model represents Toyota’s first shared battery electric vehicle with Suzuki, marking a notable development within their ongoing global partnership.

A Global Electric SUV Built on Collaboration

The vehicle will be based on the 27PL electric skateboard platform, a dedicated architecture that Toyota, Suzuki and Daihatsu jointly developed. This platform provides flexibility and scalability and both manufacturers are optimistic about its potential for adaptation across various models. Toyota intends for this new EV to cater to both domestic and international markets, reinforcing its role in the expanding global push for electrification.

Technical Highlights and 4WD Option

While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, Toyota has disclosed that the upcoming SUV will include a 4WD option, promising versatility for different driving needs. The SUV is expected to offer two battery pack options, following the approach of the Maruti Suzuki eVX. The larger of the two battery packs is anticipated to deliver a driving range exceeding 400 km, although exact figures and configurations will likely vary between the two brands.

Dimensions, Styling and Design Influence

At its concept stage, Toyota’s Urban SUV measured 4300 mm in length, 1820 mm in width, and 1620 mm in height—dimensions nearly identical to the Maruti eVX, which is 20 mm shorter in both width and height. Both vehicles will feature a shared 2700 mm wheelbase, ensuring a similar profile and interior space.

The production model is expected to retain many of the Urban SUV concept’s design cues, including an upright stance and rugged appeal, enhanced by edgy surface elements and distinctive C-shaped LED lights. Exterior panels and interior trim components will likely be shared between the Toyota and Maruti versions, though the Toyota version is anticipated to showcase styling inspired by the brand’s bZ series of electric vehicles.

Release Timeline and Market Positioning

The production version of the Toyota SUV is expected to debut after the launch of the Maruti eVX, which is slated for the first quarter of 2025. The Toyota variant is projected to follow by mid-2025, aligning with the brand’s broader electrification goals and offering consumers another choice in the growing midsize EV segment.

This collaborative model represents a significant milestone for Toyota and Suzuki, combining their strengths to support the growing demand for electric vehicles in India and beyond. Both brands remain committed to delivering new technology and options to consumers while adapting to the evolving automotive landscape.
