A close look at the sales numbers of December 2014 of every small car available on sale in India.
We earlier discussed about the highest and least selling cars in India in December 2014. Now we have a closer look at every segment and start off with small cars. The small hatchback segment is a very competitive segment since it is a buyers’ market out there. Every major manufacturer wants to cash in on the profits and companies are constantly trying to be better than their rivals. This is also the segment where Maruti Suzuki has a huge chunk in the share. The Alto is India’s top selling car while other vehicles like the Wagon R, Celerio and Ritz also score decent numbers every month.
After Maruti comes Hyundai, who with the Grand i10, Eon and i10 is trying to increase its pace and is slowly climbing its way to the numero uno position in India. The Santro got discontinued just recently else even the decade-old hatchback brought in good numbers every month earlier. Tata Motors sells the Indica+Vista and the Nano in the small car segment and while the Indica sells in low numbers thanks to its age, the Nano has been performing quite poorly. The Ford Figo sold in less numbers because the company is making way for the new Figo replacement.
Toyota sells the Etios Liva and Etios Cross in this segment and scores not-so-good numbers, partly because there is nothing really special in their vehicles. Chevrolet sold very few units of the Spark in its last month of production while it is surprising to see the Beat march ahead of the Honda Brio, mainly because of its diesel engine. The Nissan Micra is again a poor performer despite being such a good hatchback. The Datsun GO comes nowhere close to its rivals.
