A closer look at the sales numbers of compact and mid-size sedans in December 2014.
The C-segment as we know is a huge battleground. The lower spectrum of the segment consists of compact sedans like the Maruti DZire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest while the other end of the segment has mid-size sedans like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Ciaz, etc. The compact sedans are usually preferred by those who have a tight budget and yet do not fancy a hatchback while the mid-size sedans are bought by those who like to travel in comfort in the company of some good features too.
Discussing compact sedans first, as usual Maruti Suzuki is at the top with the Swift DZire selling in huge numbers just like every month. The Honda Amaze is an inconsistent performer with sales fluctuating every month. The Amaze seems to have performed pretty well in December and went on to overtake the Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. The Xcent is marching ahead of the Zest while the Mahindra Verito is a non-performer having negligible sales compared to rivals.
Moving to mid-size sedans, the Honda City has marched ahead of the Maruti Ciaz and regained its position as the market king. The Hyundai Verna seems to have fallen a bit while the Toyota Etios has brought in decent enough numbers for what it offers. The Skoda Rapid is slightly ahead of its cousin Volkswagen Vento. The Chevrolet Sail is far behind while the Nissan Sunny and Renault Scala too are performing below expectations. The Ford Fiesta sells in dismal numbers every month despite having excellent driving characteristics.
