The top selling performance bikes in June 2017 sees Royal Enfield dominate as the Classic 350 leads by over 30,000 units to the second spot holder.
As the entire nation awaited the biggest tax reform since Independence, the implementation of GST got the Indian consumer confused as to whether to go ahead with motorcycle or scooter purchases pre-GST or post-GST. Unaware of the impact of taxes on the 2-wheeler industry, most of the customers postponed their purchases and this clearly reflects in the chart above. Sales of most of the vehicles in the list (includes only 200cc-400cc vehicles) saw a slight downfall, except for Royal Enfield and KTM.
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 still continues to sell like hot cakes. It sold 42,149 units in June 2017 as compared to 39,721 units in May 2017 and occupies the coveted first spot. Following the Classic 350 is the Pulsar 180, NS 200 and RS 200 that sold 8735 units in June 2017. Sitting at the third spot, the Bullet 350 sold 7793 units last month.
The Bajaj Pulsar 220 despite being in the Indian market for over a decade, still sells in good numbers. It sold 4939 units in June 2017. Following the Pulsar 220 is the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 and Bullet Electra that sold 4408 and 3803 units respectively. The Bajaj Avenger 220 retains its seventh spot and sold 2588 units in June 2017.
The KTM 200 twins, the Duke and RC 200 clinch the eighth spot from the Yamaha FZ25 by selling 2153 units while the FZ25 sold 1999 units in June 2017 as compared to 2299 units in May 2017. The KTM Duke 390 and RC 390 now sit at the tenth spot selling 1627 units.
Next comes the Bajaj Dominar 400 that sold 927 units in June 2017 as opposed to 882 units in May 2017, while its immediate rival in terms of pricing, the KTM Duke 250 sold 835 units in June 2017. In fact, among the entire list above, it is the Duke 250 that saw the highest growth in sales. At the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth place is the Mahindra Mojo, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the Kawasaki Z250 that sold 41, 19 and 4 units respectively in June 2017.
While the Karizma ZMR sold 0 units, Honda is yet to launch an updated CBR250R (atleast with a BS4 engine). The Royal Enfield Himalayan is being readied with a BS4 engine, the new model will also get fuel-injection. While bookings have commenced for the same, deliveries will commence in August. The Apache 200 isn’t in the list above as TVS does not provide a breakup of sales of the RTR 160, 180 and 200.
