Entry-level hatchback sales in May 2021 reveal just how bad the situation has gotten of late, for overall sales plummeted by 81 percent in comparison with April 2021.
The Alto from Maruti Suzuki remained at the top, but it only found 3220 takers in May, followed by the S-Presso, which was in the same boat, with 1540 unit sales.
Renault’s Kwid (738 units), and Datsun’s redi-GO (22 units) did not do well either, while overall sales of the segment stood at 5520 units.

Moving on, the car that was only second to the Hyundai Creta in overall sales, the Maruti Swift, tops the May 2021 hatchback sales chart with 7005 units to its name.
Hyundai’s Grand i10 NIOS came second by registering sales 3804 units, followed by the Tata Tiago with 2582 unit sales and the Maruti Wagon R (2086 units).
The only other car to get into the 4-digit figure is the Hyundai Santro that posted 1122 unit sales, while the rest performed rather poorly.
In May, the hatchback segment witnessed sales of 17,231 units, which is a steep 73 percent decline month-on-month (MoM).

When it comes to the premium hatchback segment, the top spot is still occupied by the Maruti Baleno, while the Hyundai i20 climbs a position to take second place.
In all, Maruti sold 4803 units of its premium hatchback, while Hyundai retailed 3440 units of the i20. Tata’s Altroz was third with 2896 unit sales.
The Volkswagen Polo (1107 units), Toyota Glanza (298 units) and Honda Jazz (214 units), complete the list as no units of the Ford Freestyle got sold in May 2021.
Total number of cars from the segment that got sold last month stood at 12,758 units, down by 60 percent MoM.
