August 2020 hatchback sales, if anything, reveals that demand has been very strong, especially from the small hatchback segment in particular.
It seems, owing to the fear of contracting the virus, first-time buyers flocked to the showrooms (or to the websites) and most preferred the Maruti Alto. The carmaker sold 14,397 units of its very popular car in August, a 42 percent hike year-over-year (y-o-y).
S-Presso from Maruti also did very well, selling over 5300 units, while the biggest y-o-y growth (68 percent) was witnessed by the Renault Kwid, which sold 3677 times over in August 2020.
Sitting on top of the August 2020 hatchback sales list is the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which saw 14,869 units get sold in the month, a strong 19 percent growth y-o-y.
Following it closely is the Wagon R, with a 21 percent growth, having sold 13,770 times over in the month. Third in the list is the Grand i10 from Hyundai which saw 10,190 units get retailed, a small 8 percent increase in sales.
Tata’s Tiago (in fourth) and Maruti Ignis (sixth) saw the most sales growth in August, registering 89 percent and 147 percent, respectively, while the biggest sales slump (-79 percent) was witnessed by the Ford Figo, which retailed only 186 units in the month.
The premium hatchback segment grew 17 percent overall in August, with 26,604 units sold, as opposed to 22,680 units during the same period last year.
While the Baleno, having sold 10,742 units, lead the way, it was the Elite i20 and Freestyle from Ford that registered 2-digit growth figures at 10 percent and 11 percent respectively.
Altroz has had a pretty decent month once again with 4951 units reaching customers’ hands, while the re-badged Baleno, which is the Glanza, was chosen by only 1418 people, a drop of 39 percent y-o-y.
