TVS Apache leads the top selling 150cc bikes chart in June 2017 despite a fall in sales of 12 percent.
The automobile industry awaited the nation’s biggest tax reform since Independence, the GST. The majority of customers postponed their purchases and a look at the chart above is evident. Except the Suzuki Gixxer, Yamaha SZ and Honda CB Unicorn 160, every other contender in the top selling list has seen a downfall in sales.
The TVS Apache sold 32,742 units in June 2017 and held onto the first spot. Following the TVS Apache is its close rival, the Bajaj Pulsar 150. The Pulsar 150 numbers have seen a drastic downfall. Bajaj sold 23,829 units of the Pulsar 150 in June 2017 as opposed to 36,118 units in May 2017. The Pulsar 150 has been selling in the Indian market for over a decade now. Sales numbers of the TVS Apache series include the RTR 160, 180 and 200 as the company doesn’t disclose individual sales numbers.
At the third spot is yet another motorcycle that has been selling since over a decade, the Honda CB Unicorn 150. Honda sold 17,231 units of the CB Unicorn 150 in June 2017. Yamaha’s best-selling motorcycle, the FZ sits at the fourth spot selling 14,222 units while one of its close rivals, the Honda CB Hornet 160R sold 9567 units in June 2017.
The Hero Achiever clinches the sixth spot from the Bajaj V15, selling 6182 units. The V15 slips to the seventh spot and sold just 5877 units in June 2017 as compared to 11,315 units in May 2017. The Bajaj V15 saw a drop in sales by over 45 percent. Following the V15 is the Suzuki Gixxer, Honda CB Unicorn 160 and Yamaha SZ that sold 5500, 3728 and 3362 units respectively. In fact these are the only three motorcycles in the chart above that have seen a growth in sales.
The Bajaj Avenger, Yamaha R15 and Hero Xtreme sold 3035, 2985 and 1753 units respectively in the month of June 2017. On close observation, not only the Pulsar 150, V15 and Avenger 150, but almost the entire portfolio of Bajaj 2-wheelers (except Pulsar 180, NS 200 and RS 200) have seen a drastic downfall in sales. Bajaj seems to have noted this and hence the recent announcement from the Pulsar maker that it will launch new motorcycles under all its 7 brands by December this year.
