Tiago outperforms its rival the Celerio and the Ciaz outperforms its rivals, the top 25 selling cars list for January 2018 starts the calendar year on a positive note.
January marks the beginning of a new calendar year and the automobile industry, in particular, is optimistic enough to get more sales and so is the buyer sentiment. Many prospective buyers would want to start the year with a new vehicle purchase and make their New Year celebrations more memorable. One look at the table above and the sentences above will start to make sense. Except for a few cars (5 to be precise), rest all the cars on the top-selling list have posted a positive growth rate in terms of monthly volumes. While the table above is self-explanatory, allow me to take you through the other cars that couldn’t make it to the list.
Sales of the entire Skoda line-up do not equal to that of the Compass’ sales. The Czech automaker sold a total of 1270 units (Octavia 221 units, Rapid 767 units, Kodiaq 182 units and Superb 100 units). We’ve been telling this for a while and we say it again, Compass has turned the tables for FCA in India. With sales of 2106 units, the baby Grand Cherokee has been consistently selling 2000+ units every month. Clearly then, Jeep has managed to carve an identity in the minds (and hearts) of the Indian car buyer. As usual, the Fiat Punto and Linea managed to sell a meagre 35 and 10 units respectively in January.
German automaker Volkswagen sold a total of 3418 units with the Polo and Ameo raking in the numbers. The Passat sold 54 units while the Tiguan managed to find 51 homes. Datsun’s redi-GO, GO and GO+ contribute 2364, 411 and 467 units to Nissan’s overall sales of 4208 units. Nissan’s own Micra, Sunny and Terrano sold 561, 254 and 151 units respectively in January 2018. French carmaker Renault registered total sales of 6919 units with Kwid contributing more than 80 percent to that number. Lodgy and Duster sold 90 and 863 units respectively while the Captur clocked sales of 376 units in January.
American automaker Ford sold 814 units of the Figo, 1270 units of the Aspire compact sedan and 529 units of the Endeavour. Japanese automaker Toyota’s Innova and Fortuner have been raking in numbers for the brand while the Liva, Etios, Corolla and Camry sold 1001, 1733, 375 and 33 units respectively. Next up is another Japanese carmaker, Honda. WR-V has outdone the City in terms of sales. The City sold 3968 units and the Brio, Amaze and Jazz sold 422, 2836 and 2257 units respectively in January. Meanwhile, BR-V sold 1071 units and CR-V registered sales of 11 units.
Homegrown automaker Tata’s Tigor, Hexa, Bolt and Zest sold 3172, 873, 84 and 1297 units respectively. The Sumo sold 504 units and the Safari and Safari Storme sold 346 units in January 2018. Mahindra’s decade-old workhorses Bolero and Scorpio are still in good demand. Meanwhile, the KUV100 NXT sold 2637 units, TUV300 sold 2625 units and the XUV500 sold 2316 units.
Hyundai Verna has outsold the Honda City while the automaker’s premium offerings, the Elantra sold 175 units and the Tucson sold 215 units. With a market share of close to 50%, except for the Gypsy and S-Cross, all other cars from Maruti’s stable can be found in the list above. Ignis’ sales for January have improved by leaps and bounds. The stylish hatchback registered a 225% growth in sales.
