Top 20 Car Sales In May 2017; Only Maruti & Hyundai In Top 10

Maruti Swift vs Mahindra KUV100 vs Hyundai Grand i10

Maruti and Hyundai still remain the usual suspects in the top 20 car sales list in May 2017.

Maruti and Hyundai’s domination continues even in top 20 car sales list for May 2017 with 15 (11 from Maruti and 4 from Hyundai) products making their way into the top 20 list. The list above is self-explanatory so let’s talk about some new launches that happened, and of course about the cars that couldn’t make it to this list.

Fiat continues to be the worst performer compared to all other manufacturers selling just 340 units with the Punto, Punto Evo and Avventura contributing to over 80 percent of total Fiat sales. American carmaker Chevrolet’s domestic sales fell by over 50 percent owing to GM’s exit from the Indian market. Chevrolet sold only 361 units in total in May as compared to 883 units in April, Tavera still being its best seller.

Next comes Czech carmaker Skoda, that managed to sell 1064 units for May with the Rapid selling 851 units and contributing almost 80 percent of total Skoda sales. Volkswagen sold a total of 3231 units with the Polo selling 1658 units and the Ameo 926 units, contributing over 79 percent of total Volkswagen sales. Volkswagen launched the Tiguan on 24th of the last month and it sold 95 units for a week only. It’s interesting to see how will it fare against its competitors. The next month sales figures will give us a proper picture on that.

Next up is Nissan, which too saw a downfall in its overall sales. It sold 3707 units in May 2017 as compared to 4217 units in April 2017 with the Micra selling 570 units and the redi-GO selling 1689 units, both combined contributing to over 60 percent of total Nissan sales. Then comes another American carmaker Ford, that sold 6742 units in May with the Figo selling 1164 units, Aspire selling 1669 units and the EcoSport selling 3565 units. While the Pony (Mustang) sold 9 units, the SUV Endeavour sold 335 units.

The Kwid still continues to be the sole contributor to Renault’s sales chart, selling 6990 units while the next best seller, the Duster sold 1437 units. Overall, Renault sold 8639 units in May 2017. Indian carmaker Tata too saw a downfall in its total sales. Tata sold 10,855 units in May as compared to 12,827 units in April. The Tiago remains Tata’s best seller, selling 4901 units and next comes the stylish Tigor that sold 2344 units last month.

Toyota sold 5643 units of the Innova Crysta and 1961 units of the Fortuner. These two models continue to back Toyota’s sales charts and we expect them to do so for years to come as well because that is the level of acceptance they have received from Indian consumers. Next comes Honda that sold 11,278 units in total. The City sold 4046 units, the recently launched WR-V sold 2814 units and the Jazz sold 1818 units.

Mahindra sold 2093 units of the XUV500 and 2341 units of the TUV300. Over a decade old Bolero and Scorpio still continue to be best sellers for Mahindra. Hyundai sold a total of 42,007 units in May in which the Xcent contributed 3804 units, while the Verna and the Tucson contributed 563 and 86 units respectively to Hyundai’s sales. Lastly, Maruti sold 1,30,248 units in May with the S-Cross selling 2249 units and the Ignis selling 4518 units.
