May seems to be a slow month for the four-wheeler market, as majority of the manufacturers record a fall in their sales, as compared to April. Maruti still holds strong with the first four positions on the top.
The Indian four-wheeler market seems to have slowed down in the month of May. With a majority of the manufacturers recording a decrease in their sales, the market as a whole sees a downward trend. Maruti still stays comfortably at the top, with its Alto which sold 19,847 units in the month of May, recording an increase of 19.68%.
It’s all Maruti up to the fourth position with the Swift DZire, Wagon R, and Swift taking up the second, third and fourth position respectively. The Swift DZire recorded an impressive growth of 68.28% by selling 16,986 units in the month of May. The Wagon R and the Swift hatchback, saw a fall of 13.65% and 21.11% respectively in their sales figures.
Coming in a close fifth position is the Hyundai Grand i10 which sees a healthy growth of 22.51%. Only 300 units separate the Swift and the Grand i10. The Baleno has finally broke the five-digit barrier, by managing to sell 10,004 units. With the upcoming launch of its booster-jet variant, the numbers are expected to rise even further.
The seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions have all seen a downward fall in their sales. The Elite i20 comes down to seventh position with 8600 units sold, which is 22.85% less than the last month. On the eighth position we have the Celerio, which sees a fall of 13.68%. Coming in ninth we have the Renault Kwid, which has lost the most. With just 5600 units sold as compared to 9795 unit sales in April, it translates to a fall of 42.83%. It was speculated that production of the Kwid was halted due to engine issues but Renault has clarified that the plant was shut for routine maintenance only.
On the last position we have the Ciaz, which took the Honda City’s position in the list, in spite of recording a fall of 9.01%.
The overall downward trend could be attributed to the upcoming festive season as people prefer buying their cars during the festive month which is considered auspicious by many.
