With sales figures of February 2016 out, we take a look at the top 10 selling cars. The Renault Kwid is the only car on the list which isn’t a Maruti or a Hyundai.
The Indian car market is very different from other markets. Here, the best car doesn’t sell the most and rather the car with the widest service network and the best word of mouth finds place in people’s homes. Every month, when we analyse the sales figures and see the top 10 selling cars, the top five positions remain more or less unchanged.
In February too, the scenario repeated. The top four positions are held by Maruti cars. The Alto is the leader with more than 21,000 copies selling. The most popular compact sedan of India, Swift DZire manages to find 17,410 new customers owing to the recent facelift it got whereas the Swift managed a healthy 15,475 units.
The oldest car on the list, the Maruti Wagon R never ceases to surprise everyone. It found place in 14,209 new homes who buy it for the practicality it offers. It is also a very popular choice of cab drivers for intra-city services. The highest selling Hyundai car is the Grand i10 which retained the fifth spot despite its sales falling by over 10%.
The Hyundai Elite i20 sees stable demand as it is a tough package to beat. The Renault Kwid has been doing very well for the French carmaker and sales grew by 26% over previous month. The Maruti Baleno seems to be losing a bit of steam now with sales falling slightly. The Hyundai Eon and the Maruti Ciaz also reappear on the list after a few months, while the Honda City is nowhere to be seen. The City got dethroned from its position after a very long time and the Ciaz overtook it in numbers this time.
